SHCHEDRYK FEST

All-Ukrainian Choral Contest SHCHEDRYK FEST is devoted to outstanding Ukrainian composer, choir conductor, teacher, and folklorist – Mykola Dmytrovych Leontovych (1877-1921), and bear the name of his immortal masterpiece – the ingenious arrangement of the Ukrainian folk song ‘Shchedryk’, which became the symbol of Christmas and New Year all over the world.

SHCHEDRYK FEST is a part of a big international project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of founding the Ukrainian National Chorus leaded by Olexandr Koshyts. The Chorus had made an unprecedented tour to 18 countries of Europe and America (1919-1924). And this case in the history of Ukraine had got a name –  ‘cultural diplomacy’ of  Ukrainian People’s Republic under the patronage of Symon Petliura.

The main founders and organizers of the Contest are the City State Administration of Pokrovsk, Donetsk Regional State Administration, in cooperation with the All-Ukrainian Choral Society named after M. Leontovych.

The main aim of the Contest is to preserve and develop the choral singing culture in the region and Ukraine in general, to increase its importance in the spiritual life of the society, and to increase the performing level of choirs.

The main task is to create additional artistic space for Ukrainian choirs and conductors, as well as to expand the range of musical directions, styles and choral schools.

The project will help to preserve the achievements of Ukrainian choral singing, to strengthen  creative and personal communication among choirs and young people who have chosen choral singing as their profession. It aims for comprehension of choral art as a fundamental genre of Ukrainian culture.

A special mission of the Contest is to support our compatriots – residents of the Donetsk region, part of the territories of which is temporarily occupied.

Organizational fundamentals of the Contest

All-Ukrainian choral contest SHCHEDRYK FEST will be held in the city of Pokrovsk, Donetsk region, on December, 26-29, 2018. The qualifying phase will be held on October, 1-31, 2018.

The competition will be held in two rounds in the following categories:

Mixed choirs (by the prior selection at qualifing phase, no more than 6 choirs are allowed for participation in the Contest, the number of singers ranges from 24 to 32 artists, excluding conductor, concertmaster and two accompanying persons);

Homogeneous choirs (male and female academic choirs, by the prior selection at qualifing phase, no more than 6 choirs are allowed for participation in the Contest, the number of singers ranges from 24 to 32 artists, excluding conductor, concertmaster and two accompanying persons);

Children choirs (choirs, age of singers is not less than full 8 years and not more than full 16 years, by the prior selection at qualifing phase, no more than 6 choirs are allowed for participation in the Contest, the number of singers ranges from 32 to 40 young artists, excluding conductor, concertmaster and three accompanying persons. The leader of the children’s choir is obligated to submit to the Organizing Committee a list of members of the choir and copies of their documents before the beginning the Contest.

Each choir – applicant for participation in the Contest is obliged to fill in an online application form and to send compulsory annexes to the Organizing Committee by October, 31, 2018 on the following e-mail address: shchedrykfest@ukr.net.

Compulsory annexes to the application form (should be sent to the Organizing Committee on the following e-mail address: shchedrykfest@ukr.net):

1) a video recording of a choir concert that took place not earlier than six months before the end of the qualifying phase of the Contest (that is from May to October 2018);

2) brief creative biography of the choir (up to 1 thousand symbols in Word format);

3) brief creative biography of the conductor (up to 1 thousand symbols in Word format);

4) high-quality color photo of the choir and conductor (extension at least 300 dpi );

Choirs – applicants for participation in the Contest that have not submitted on time, or have not properly completed the application form and compulsory annexes, are not allowed to take part in the qualifying phase of the Contest. The results of the qualifying phase will be posted on the official website of the Contest www.shchedrykfest.com.ua, as well as sent to e-mail address of the choirs – applicants on November 10, 2018.

Choirs that will be selected in the qualifying phase for participation in the Contest are obliged to send to the Organizing Committee’s e-mail by November 26, 2018 the following:

1) confirmation of taking part in the Contest in Pokrovsk on  December 26-29, 2018;

2) competition program and scores (in digital format); non-competitive 60-minute free program for the performance on the festival ‘Our Christmas in Donetsk region’.

Competition Program

Requirements for all catagories (mixed, homogeneous, children’s choirs):

Tour 1

Choral, spiritual music (original works of Ukrainian and foreign composers, at least 50% – Ukrainian music). Compulsory to perform:

1. Choral composition of the Western European composer of XV-XVII centuries (except children’s choirs);

2. Choral composition of the Ukrainian composer, written in the XXI century .;

3. Choral composition of a foreign composer, written after 1950;

4. Original, spiritual work or arrangemet of Ukrainian folk song by Mykola Leontovych (on choice).

The duration of the performance of each choir in Tour 1 is 25 minutes (including applause,  enter and exit from the scene). All works are performed a cappella. The conductor must inform the Jury about the changing of tonality before the Contest  auditions.

Tour 2

Folklore (artistic author’s arrangements of Ukrainian folk songs of different genres). The presentation of regional folklore in artistic author’s arrangements is welcomed. Compulsory to perform:

1. Christmas carols or shchedrivkas in the arrangement of M. Leontovych;

2. The premiere performance of a carol or a shchedrivka, written by a contemporary Ukrainian composer representing the region of the choir.

The duration of the performance of each choir in Tour 2 is 20 minutes (including applause,  enter and exit from the scene). In Tour 2 it is allowed to use instrumental accompaniment (piano, folk instruments, percussion). Not less than half of the works must be performed a cappella. The conductor must inform the Jury about the changing of tonality before the Contest  auditions.

Each choir must have ‘Shchedryk’ (arrangement by M. Leontovych) in the repertoire, as well as a non-competitive 60-minute free program for the performance on the festival ‘Our Christmas in Donetsk region’.

All Contest auditions will be held on public. The Jury has the right to admit to Tour 2 not all the choirs participated in the Tour 1.

The names of winning choirs in each category (without naming places) will be announced on the evening of each day of the Contest auditions. The information on awarding the laureates (naming places) and the Grand Prix of the Contest will be announced on the Gala Concert on December 29, 2018. All winning choirs are obliged to take part in the Gala Concert.

Jury of the Contest

Audition and evaluation of choir performances at the Contest is carried out by the International Jury consisting of leading Ukrainian and foreign choir conductors, musicologists, outstanding music and public figures. The Jury is approved by the Organizing Committee of the Contest and does its work in accordance with this Regulation.

The Jury evaluates the choir performances according to the following criteria: intonation, interpretation of the work, stylistic accuracy, ensemble, selection of repertoire, stage culture.

The Jury’s decision is final and can not be appealed. The jury may award additional special awards, founded by other organizations and institutions.

Organizational, creative and fіnancial basis of the Contest

Organizational and creative basis (organisation, preparation, invitation and communication with participants, running of qualification phase, reviewing contest programs and so on) and financial support are carried out by the City State Administration of Pokrovsk, Donetsk Regional State Administration and the All-Ukrainian Choral Society named after M. Leontovych.

The Organizing Committee provides participants and accompanying persons with financial compensation of transport expenses, accommodation and three meals a day during the Contest. The Organizing Committee welcomes a voluntary desire of local authorities of the regions of Ukraine and other potential sponsors to cover (partially) the costs associated with the choir’s participation at the Contest.

The Organizing Committee reserves the right to make video and audio recordings and photos during the Contest. The right to use these materials belongs exclusively to the Organizing Committee. Participants can not refuse of video and audio recordings and photo shootings during the Contest.

Awarding the winners of the Contest

The jury will identify the best choirs in each nomination, that will be awarded the title and financial reward.

Nomination ‘Mixed choir’:

1st Prize – Diploma of the Laureate and 42 000 UAH.

2nd Prize – Diploma of the Laureate and 28 000 UAH.

3rd Prize – Diploma of the Laureate and 14 000 UAH.

Nomination ‘Homogeneous choir’:

1st Prize – Diploma of the Laureate and 28 000 UAH.

2nd Prize – Diploma of the Laureate and 21 000 UAH.

3rd Prize – Diploma of the Laureate and 14 000 UAH.

Nomination ‘Children’s choir’:

1st Prize – Diploma of the Laureate and 14 000 UAH.

2nd Prize – Diploma of the Laureate and 11 000 UAH.

3rd Prize – Diploma of the Laureate and 8 000 UAH.

According to the results of three days of the Contest auditions, the Jury will define the choir and award it the title ‘Grand Prix Winner’, Diploma and 84 000 UAH, as well as the opportunity to make an anniversary concert tour in Europe and America in honor of the 100th anniversary of the world tour of the Ukrainian National Chorus leaded by Olexandr Koshyts. The Jury reserves the right not to determine this award. Other choirs will be awarded with the Diplomas of participation at the Contest.
