The opening of the sculptural composition in honor of the outstanding Ukrainian composer and choral conductor Mykola Leontovych was held in Pokrovsk on August 26, 2018.
The history reveals that in distant 1904-1908 Mykola Leontovych lived in the settlement Grishino (now Pokrovsk), where he worked at the railway school, taught music and singing, and created the first working chorus of railway workers in Ukraine. And here he wrote one of the arrangements of ‘Shchedryk’, Christmas melody that is well-known all over the world.
The idea of ​​a sculptural composition belongs to Petro Antypov. Sculptors Mykola Biryuchynsky, Ivan Gutym, Sergiy Lebednytsky, sculptor-master on metal work Olexander Serdyuk and architect Sergiy Shaposhnikov were involved in the creation of the monument. All work from the idea to its implementation was done in a three-month period. The project was supported by the City State Administration of Pokrovsk.
The grand opening of the sculptural monument took place under the charming music of the composer performed by the brass band of the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine in the Kyiv region and the children’s choir ‘Shchedryk’ (Kyiv). Among the honored guests at the opening were the President of the European Choral Association Europa Cantat Gabor Moczar (Hungary), the chairman of the All-Ukrainian Choir Society named after M.Leontovych Olexander Tarasenko, Advisor of the Minister of Culture of Ukraine Anzhelika Rudnytska and others.
At the initiative of the City State Administration of Pokrovsk in cooperation with the All-Ukrainian Choir Society named after M.Leontovych, in order to honor the memory of the outstanding Ukrainian composer and choir conductor Mykola Leontovych, and the preservation and development of singing culture in the region and Ukraine – Pokrovsk will host the All-Ukrainian Choir Contest ‘Shchedryk Fest’ on December 26-29, 2018.
